Narita Airport is about 60 kilometres from central Tokyo, further than many people expect, and it is where a good trip often starts with exhaustion if you choose the wrong option. This article compares every option so you can see clearly which suits whom.
| Option | Suits | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Express train | 1 to 2 travellers with little luggage | Fast and punctual, but you must change trains to reach your accommodation yourself |
| Limousine bus | Guests at large hotels where the bus stops directly | No dragging luggage, but it can be caught in traffic and departures are limited |
| Taxi | Travellers who want speed and are not concerned about price | Very expensive, and most drivers do not speak English |
| Private transfer | Families, groups and travellers with several bags | The price is known before booking, and the driver waits for you at the arrivals gate |
The most common problem is not getting to Tokyo but the final stretch from the station to the hotel. Many people reach their destination station only to find they still have a ten-minute walk with two large suitcases, through passageways full of stairs and crowds.
The other issue is timing. If your flight lands after ten at night, some express trains have stopped running and the last limousine bus has gone too. That leaves only a taxi, which is very expensive, or a vehicle booked in advance.
In regular periods, booking one to two weeks ahead is enough. During cherry blossom, autumn leaves, New Year and Golden Week, however, vehicles fill up very quickly. We recommend checking availability before you buy your flights, so you do not have to change plans later.
