Many well-known restaurants open their bookings early and fill very quickly.
Over the long holidays, seats sell out well before the travel date.
Entry slots have to be secured the moment sales open.
Many booking pages are in Japanese from the first field to the last.

It is not that venues will not take foreign customers. It is that most booking systems are built for people already living in Japan.
A great many restaurants take bookings mainly by telephone, and the whole call is in Japanese. Often there is no online option at all.
Certain restaurants and booking sites ask for a telephone number in Japan to confirm the reservation, which most visitors do not have.
Only a small share of restaurants offer online booking, and most of those pages are entirely in Japanese, from the name field through to the cancellation terms.
Booking ahead in Japan rarely means a few days. In many cases it means months. We can arrange all of these for you, and customers booking a vehicle with us can simply add the request at the same time.
